Perhaps you have heard the siren call of Hawaii and have decided to make Oahu your new home. Or, maybe business is bringing you to Honolulu for an extended period, maybe even permanently. In any case, it is a good idea to understand a few basic things about moving to Honolulu before you arrive. At Hawaii Moves, we want your transition to island life to be as pleasurable as a Hawaiian sunset. To that end, here are five points to keep in mind before your move.
1. “Island Time” is a Real Thing
Life moves a little slower in Hawaii. Mail delivery may take a bit longer. Traffic can sometimes move at a snail’s pace. Take a deep breath of plumeria-scented air and meditate on the many benefits of taking life slower.
2. Pack Less, Pack Well
Moving to Honolulu may mean not taking all your current stuff with you. While Honolulu offers a wide range of real estate choices, properties in general may be somewhat smaller by mainland standards. On the plus side, you may never again need that arctic parka.
3. Lenders are Locals
Local financial institutions handle Hawaiian real estate transactions; there are no mainland lenders. A local real estate agency can offer information and assistance in arranging financing.
4. Plan Ahead to Register Your Car
To register a car in Hawaii you need Hawaiian car insurance, which is typically a simple matter to set up. However, it may take a bit more time and organization to get a Hawaiian driver’s license, as there is currently only one location in Hawaii where you can have one issued.
5. Expect Visitors
During the first year after moving to Honolulu, expect to have friends and relatives frequently visiting you. At Hawaii Moves, we can help you find the perfect place to share the spirit of aloha while making it all your own. Give us a call at 1-800-735-2100.
